CONFIDENCE BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
Our connection with Barker College began through their work placement team, giving students with an interest in the automotive industry the chance to complete work experience at Barr Automotive. From there, the relationship grew into something bigger.
In 2024, Barker College launched a new Year 10 community program designed to help students explore life and learning beyond the classroom. We were genuinely humbled to be take part as one of the local businesses students can visit.
LEARNING THROUGH EXPERIENCE
Each year, a group of Year 10 students who elect the Automotive Class spend an hour and a half in our workshop for a hands-on session that covers the basics of car ownership, including checking tyre pressures, oil and fluids, and even how to safely change a tyre.
The response from students (and teachers) has been fantastic. Many are surprised by how much there is to learn and how much confidence comes from understanding the basics. Now in our second year, we’re continuing to build on the program, making it even more interactive and engaging.
We believe that volunteering our time for programs like this is one way we can give back to the community: helping the next generation feel capable, confident, and safe as they step into car ownership and adulthood.
